I've been doing a fair bit of meta-ing with [livejournal.com profile] tiptoe39 and some capslock crack at [livejournal.com profile] speccygeekgrrl's lj, but mostly the secret in question has made me genuinely curious - what makes a fic stand out as good? A lot of people are throwing around random comments in the forum (i.e. "97% of fic is crap") which makes me wonder what standards by which people judge what they read.

Here's a few that factor into my own personal enjoyment... )

So what are your thoughts? What are your standards? Sharing time!

I'm in an overthinkity mood today, so I'm going to discuss shipping. This post is going to be all about my favorite het couples, because I tend to lean more towards het than slash, but if I'm feeling extra ambitious I might make a slash post later. Join in if you want, or list and describe your ships in your own journals, whatever floats your boat.

As a bonus, I've included recs for some of my favorite pairings. Spoilers are inherent, though, so enter at your own risk.

I try to be an equal-opportunity shipper. )

So I've shown you mine... now you show me yours! What do you think of these pairings? What pairings do you prefer? Any fic you'd care to share?

I'll share my ice cream cake.

I was thinking after scanning several sex-related polls last night about what makes good porn and what makes bad porn. I wonder if there's a way to objectively measure what smut is good and what smut is bad, regardless of whether it's het, slash, femslash. A lot of the conversation in the polls last night had to do with vocabulary. That's a good place to start, I think, because what one person finds acceptable another might find obscene, and there's always the risk of overusing certain words. But I think that's only part of the debate. )

No, wait, I haven't completely wasted my time today. In fact, while I was mulling all this over at work, I came up with a smut fic meme, to bide my time before [livejournal.com profile] heroes_exchange assignments go out.

smutty meme! ) Also, here's my new favorite story.

I'm working on like five fics at once over here, so I've been thinking a lot about writing and the writing process... )And so now, when I totally intended to work on any one of the five fics I've started, I've gone on and on about the writing process that is not actually processing anything right now. But I'm still curious: If you write fic or anything else, what is your writing process like?

So far I have started two discussions on topics related to writing.
