I've been on a fic-kick for a few days now (not like any of you could tell, right?) but I'm starting to get a little lazy when it comes to finding something worthwhile to read. So, in order to accentuate my mental exhaustion, here's a poll!

With a few exceptions, I only read fic for specific pairings in all my fandoms, and I usually just join those comms. I also belong to a lot of fic challenge comms and my last resort is trolling through the mess at ff.net. I occasionally read fic recs, but those can be sketchy for me. It's not that I don't trust the people doing the reccing, but I like/dislike specific things and don't want to read just anything.

I hear ya on the recs thing. I'm not as picky about pairings, but if I'm looking for something specific (angsty, fluffy, kinky) recs aren't always the best way to find them.

On the other hand, if you find any really good Glee fics, let me know. Like 90% of what I've read this week have been painfully mediocre.

But seriously, I use all of those to find fics. It can be hit or miss, but I don't have much of a system of finding the ones I want to read. The only thing I do look for are fics by specific writers that I love. And that is usually pairing/fandom specific for the most part.

I find that I use recs only for fandoms that I'd never have thought to read fic for on my own. For example, I love comms like crack_van and epic_recs, because otherwise I'd never have found some really fantastic but random fic, like one for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and an Ugly Betty/Batman Begins crossover that is my favorite thing ever. I almost never listen to recs for fandoms that I already sometimes read; if it's for a character or pairing that I would read, more than likely, I've already read it by the time someone recc'ed it, and not even a rec from my best friend ever would get me to read about a pairing I don't care for. To be honest, when I make rec posts, it's mostly as a way of keeping a log for myself of things that I like, rather than because I expect anyone else would care. The only times I've ever really branched out of the pairings and authors that I already like have been during exchanges or kink memes, when for some reason, I feel much more open than I usually do. I read 75% of the stories at heroes_exchange and plan to read everything I can possibly understand at the crossover exchange.

Funny, but the only weakness of the story is that point exactly. She "commutes "between NYC and Gotham, which doesn't make any sense. So is Gotham like... Trenton???? And then Clark Kent makes a cameo, visiting from Metropolis, which is... where?!?!? Otherwise, it's totally amazing in every sense of the word. Here

I usually only read what's posted on my flist, until I have a mad craving for something, then I dig through archives for my favorite pairing (FF.N, for terrible fic to read). Recs used to figure in pretty heavily, but now it just feels like people rec their friends or the fandom standards over and over again, and there's nothing new to read for people who've been in fandom a while.

Recs used to be a huge part of what I read up until recently. They were especially helpful when I was just learning to navigate fandom. In anything besides Heroes, I think recs would still be the way to go for me.

True. Recs are still a good way to navigate a fandom that's been established for a while and is new to you. I guess I'm just rather disenchanted with the rec'ing process right now, because I keep clicking on recs and hating what I'm reading (if it's even anything new).

My favourite way to find good fic to read in a fandom I don't know is to find the nominations/winners list for fanfic awards. It can be a little clique-y, but there's usually a lot of good stuff in those, and it lets me find good writers whose masterlists I can then peruse.

That's probably not that helpful for a relatively new fandom like Glee, though...

I do a little of everything. Sadly, I've come to find that apart from Heroes, the only ships I'm ever into are super rare pairs - I usually spend ages hunting for fic for them and only come up with one or two. :(

I really like recs because I'm kind of meh on fandom at the moment, so I'm barely reading anything but when someone is super effusive about something, it prompts me to go take a look.
