Self-rec!

So [livejournal.com profile] perdiccas recently recced me on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, and that makes me go WOO.

But it also got me thinking on some sort of tangent - I don't know, bear with me, I'm still severely undercaffeinated this morning - that if I had to recommend one of my own fics to anyone, I don't know which one it would be.

I mean, a lot of recs take into account who you're reccing to, especially as far as gen/het/slash is concerned, or certain pairings, or particular squicks or kinks. And for some things, like [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, you might be looking to rec a variety of stuff, so you're trying to strike a balance between what you're reccing.

But if you had to pick one fic out of everything you've written, what would you rec? Don't go by anyone else's favorites - just yours. What do you think is your best work? What have you written that you wish everyone would read? Think about it, then post it here in a comment and I promise by the end of the week I will have read it and commented on it. Don't worry about characters or pairings or het or slash or even length. Don't even worry about fandom. If you can't decide between two or three, post them all and I will choose one to read.

I hope this is going to be fun!

I've got two, so feel free to choose between them:

One is a Gabriel/Elle fic:
Virgin State Of Mind

The second is a ZQ/KB RPF fic:
Take A Picture, It'll Last Longer

I'm going to at least skim them both... be on the lookout for comments! :P

I think this is a great idea and I'll definitely be checking back to see people's answers. It'll take me a while to pick one of my own, though, I think! :)

I know - I was going to include a self-rec of mine in this post, but dude, it's really tough...

[identity profile] perdiccas.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Uff. I can't decide. Okay, I just skimmed a lot of *dire* fic on my masterlist (why did no one tell me I write crap?!) so here's three for you; flip a three sided coin ;)

All Sylar/Luke:

The Call Them Cold Blooded Killers - PG-13, action-adventurey gen
See How The Light Shines Through Him - R, angsty hurt/comfort
Toronto, 2011 - NC-17, dark

I already know which of YOURS I would rec, because I have! ;) You write such good Mohelle. *happy sigh*

I'd pick Intersecting Orbits. Sorry it's a long one, but I think it's the best writing I've managed outside of the still-unfinished Fast-Forward Rewind.

[identity profile] cruiscin-lan.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I might have to read it it snatches, but I'll definitely leave a comment or two as I go along!

Mohelle is like my fun-happy-yay thing to write. They really are a pick-me-up :P.

Wow, it's really hard trying to figure out which fics of mine I actually like enough to rec because I feel like my stuff is never good enough. That said, I think these two are my favorites and I'm actually proud of.

Moments, it's more of an Arthur gen fic but it's got a bit of Angela/Arthur

and

Lay Down Your Heart, it's got Peter/Elle and Sylar/Elle

Legacies. No contest, no runners-up.

I actually did a long meandering post about my top ten fanfics I've written, and the process of writing each of them, that I thought was a pretty cool meme. I'd love to read anyone else's version of it.

I am such a whore about recs. All I ever wanted in life was copious unsolicited praise. Fandom is soooo bad for me ^_^

[identity profile] takhallus.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That is such an interesting question!

This is the second fic I ever wrote ever, not just in Heroes, EVER.

http://takhallus.livejournal.com/1039.html

And I still think I never got better, in fact I think I just got worse lol

Mm, I definitely think either With Love In Her Eyes, because Virginia Gray is such an underwritten character, and when she is written she's this obsessive witch, Perhaps Love, which is, to this day, the only fic that I feel like I could not have possibly done more to make it better. Writing it was like giving birth and listening to music and seeing colors and all good things in life. I'm proud of it the way I think my mother is proud of me as her daughter.

The other one would probably be Reverse Oedipal, but I think a ton of people just haven't read that one because they're put off by the pairing (which never gets more graphic than slight frottage). Which saddens me, because it was the longest, smoothest thing that I've written since Perhaps Love and I haven't written anything quite so long and satisfying since. :( Ah well.

Apsis or Torquetum.

This is a great idea. Mind if I hijack it?

Go for it! Spread the love! Or, in this case, possibly narcissism and navel-gazing.

[identity profile] etoile-dunord.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean about not knowing which of your own fics to rec. I was looking through my master list and thinking things like "This one uses an idea that a lot of people like... This one is a good example of my personal style of writing... This one took the most work... So which one do I want people to read??" ^_^

Ultimately, though, I'd choose my fic Peace by Piece (part one, part two, part three). It's a laguishing WIP, but I'm chipping away at the last part. It even has its own icon that I uploaded especially for it. *points to icon* =D

Geh, I'm torn. Not that it matters.

My favorite thing I've ever done is my The L Word/Veronica Mars crossover - but that hasn't been posted yet because I'm so fucking OCD over it because it's my favorite thing I've ever done. Hopefully, you know, before the end of the damn year, :|

Other than that, Passage, no fucking contest. I don't think everybody really gets all the things I set up in that for the series re: sex and Elle's growth of humanity while Claire's losing hers, sad face, but I really do love and am proud of it, to the extent that I can't make myself ashamed of it, you know?

It's one of the first things I wrote for Heroes, but I still have unreasonable love for Everything In Its Right Place.
