I only use beta readers for specific concerns. Sometimes for plot reasons I'll need to include a character that I don't normally write about, or I'm a little unclear about a certain era of the canon that affects the story I'm writing in a later one. Then I'll ask someone to look over that part and let me know if I got it right and, if not, what I need to fix.
